The Wilson-Bappu linear relation between absolute visual magnitude and the logarithm of corrected Ca II K emission-line width is examined to determine whether other observables, such as the intensity of the K-line emission or color temperature, can affect that relation. A statistical analysis is performed using a sample of 284 late-type stars with good trigonometric parallaxes, reduced to a common system of values for the logarithm of corrected Ca II K emission-line width and K-line emission intensity. The results show that the Wilson-Bappu relation is linear, that its calibration is accurate, and that a correction factor must be introduced because of the intensity of the K reversal. It is found that this correction may be as large as 2 magnitudes. The intensity effect in the Wilson-Bappu relation is interpreted as a simple geometrical overlap of the absorption and emission K-line profiles.
