By comparing the properties of various kinds of active galactic nuclei, of their host galaxies, and of their environments, it is concluded that it is impossible to explain the observed great variety of AGNs by variations of the radio jet orientation with respect to the line of sight and/or by variations of the radio jet relativism (the "unified scheme"). It particularly concerns the hypothesis regarding the nature of the progenitors of BL Lac-like objects and radio-loud quasars, namely, the radio galaxies of FRI and FRII types, correspondingly. A new extended unified scheme is proposed.
