It is shown that information in the initial neutrino burst from a supernova can reveal whether the source is made of matter or antimatter and yield very stringent limits on the mass of the electron neutrino. A measurement of the burst may be possible in large-volume detectors presently being built. Characteristics of the first Kamiokande II event suggest that their initial interacting particle was an electron neutrino rather than an electron antineutrino; if this neutrino is identified with the neutronization burst of SN 1987A, it constitutes evidence that the collapsing star was made of matter rather than antimatter.
