We present a summary of observations which lead us to conclude that pre-stellar cores, which represent the stage of star formation before the main protostellar collapse phase, are morphologically consistent with the predictions of ambipolar diffusion models. We then describe recent JCMT observations which appear to show that the evolutionary timescales required for a core to evolve from densities of 104-105/cu cm relative to the time taken to evolve from a density of 105/cu cm to the point where a hydrostatic protostar forms, are also consistent with the detailed predictions of ambipolar diffusion models.
