Cosmic Rays: Solar Modulation

Scientific paper

An analysis has been made of the 11-year variation of cosmic rays using data of stratospheric sounding and of the neutron component, along with the solar activity indices and the parameters of the interplanetary medium. A parameter which takes account of the strength of the general magnetic field of the Sun has been introduced into a previously established empirical law relating comsic-ray intensity to solar-activity parameters and the heliolatitude of active regions, which has led to a sharp improvement of the correspondence to cosmic rays. Peculiarities of the modulation of galactic cosmic rays in 1982, which manifested themselves in a sharp decrease of the cosmic-ray intensity with a simultaneous increase of the strength of the Sun's general magnetic field, in an increase of the amplitudes of the annual and 27-day variations of cosmic rays, and in the appearance of a large north-south asymmetry of cosmic rays, are discussed. All of this is related to the action of the Sun's general magnetic field.
