The European Community SOLICE project investigates the effect of the 11 year solar cycle on the stratosphere. For the project, Service d'Aéronomie use a stratospheric mechanistic coupled dynamical-chemistry model, MSDOL, developed by SA and ACRI. The tropical Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) is forced in the model by relaxing the dynamical variables towards NCEP reanalysis data. Three pairs of model run have been carried out. For each pair of runs, one run uses solar forcing values corresponding to solar minimum, and the other with forcing values corresponding to solar maximum. The level of lower boundary planetary wave forcing is varied between pairs of model runs. Model results for temperature and ozone levels are presented and discussed.
