It is shown by a simultaneous integration of the nonlinear equations governing the thermal behavior of 'perturbed' regions, assumed to be in pressure equilibrium with the unperturbed flow in a planetary nebula, that, following the uncoupling of the radiation field in the nebular shell with the gas, large-scale density and temperature inhomogeneities can develop between the two components due to a combination of grain and O I cooling. Furthermore, the possible development of gravitational instabilities in a nebula during the early phases of evolution are considered.
