Dodecane solubility was found to be compatible with published low molecular weight alkane solubilities according to expressions relating either concentration logarithm or RT In mol fraction to molecular size. We compute dodecane solubility at 1.82 g/1 from saline medium measurements of 1.78 g/1. Bacteria were shown to utilize dissolved hydrocarbon from solution reducing concentration to < 0.14 g/1, final values depending on residence time. Neither suspended estuarine sediment nor smectite removed significant quantities of dodecane from saturated saline solutions. At 1/5 saturation of dodecane in distilled water, no dodecane (< 0.001 g/g clay) associated itself with clay, and the dodecane could be recovered from the suspension by solvent extraction. Thus the dissolved hydrocarbon is removed from true solution by bacteria but not by clay.
