The influence of a sharp change of temperature gradient on the integral properties of a star (compared with the case in which all changes occur gradually) is found to be extremely small. A gradient discontinuity ("nabla jump") equal to that caused by convective overshooting at the base of the solar convection zone causes (on the basis of a simple model) radius and luminosity changes of no more than a few parts in a thousand. A similar result is found for solar-type contact binaries with common convective envelopes.
