The evolution of modern theories of the formation of the Universe is traced, with consideration of observational and experimental evidence. Grand Unified Field theories (GUTs), which encompass the strong, electroweak, and gravitational forces, can presently be proved only in experiments involving energies occurring during the Big Bang, or by observations of proton decay. The significance of an apparent shortage of monopoles, predicted to be abundant by GUTs, and vacuum strings is discussed as a problem for GUTs validity. The theory of an Inflationary Universe includes provisions for inhomogeneity in the early Universe, accompanied by large scale phase changes which account for present-day observed inhomogeneities. Applications of particle physics principles have supported the Inflationary Universe scenario of an origin out of nothing, although the perturbations necessary to account for the observed large scale structures have not been analytically proven to exist in an early Inflationary Universe. It is suggested that the present era is near the time when the Universe will either begin collapsing or will expand forever.
