The very narrow beams characterizing spacecraft optical communications systems must be found in a wide field of uncertainty and must be precisely tracked during periods of data transmission. The performance capabilities of the requisite pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) system are presently discussed with a view to inherent physical limitations. Having established the line-of-sight between both optical terminals with an accuracy of the order of + or - 3 microrads, the PAT must maintain this alignment over the entire period of visibility with an accuracy greater than 0.5 microrad.
