This paper reports on the analysis of the Ijopega chondrite, a single stone weighing 7.33 kg with a diameter of 18 cm which fell in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. It is shown that this meteorite, which is classified as a bronzite chondrite (H6 group), is a brecciated and highly recrystallized object composed of homogeneous olivine, bronzite, plagioclase, diopside, kamacite, taenite, troilite, chromite, and whitlockite. A high equilibration temperature (880 C or 940 C) is suggested by the Fe(2+) and Mg partitioning between orthoand clinopyroxene. Bulk chemical analysis indicates that this meteorite has about twice the average H-group abundance of sulfur and a slightly lower Mg/Si ratio. The abundances of 22 trace elements, including the rare earths, are found to be about 10% lower than the average H-group chondrite abundances.
