The deuterocarbons released by cementite and synthetic alloys of carbon in alpha-phase iron treated with deuterated acid are compared with those obtained from similar treatment of lunar soils. Results show that iron carbides are unlikely to be the hydrolyzable carbon phase in lunar soils. All deuterocarbon gases liberated from lunar soils, with the exception of C2D2, can be accounted for by carbon in solid solution in body-centered cubic iron. The concentration of carbon in the alpha-iron of lunar material is calculated to be 0.27-0.77% by weight, a value in excess of the solid solubility limits of C in alpha-Fe but similar to values obtained for the synthetic alpha-Fe samples. Possible reasons for the large carbon content are considered, and mechanisms whereby carbon could form solid solutions in surface layers of alpha-iron produced by sputtering are outlined.
