The statistics determining the strategies for identifying the great number of new asteroids in surveys is discussed. If computed positions are tentatively identified with the nearest trails, then the probability function for the number of errors is geometric, with the parameter depending on the average number of trails inside the error ellipse of the prediction. If positions are transformed to the slowly varying parameters T and I, then interpolation methods may give higher accuracies in the linking of two lunations than computations based on perihelion orbits. The most probable position predicted from two positions is given by the 'maximum likelihood orbit'.
