While collecting 140 ancient Chinese records of lunar eclipse magnitudes and times, covering the period from the 3rd to the early 17th century A.D. (before the end of Ming Dynasty), the author calculates a lunar canon for 3500 years (1500 B.C. to 2050 A.D.). In accordance with these bases, a study and analysis of the accuracy of these records is made. It is concluded that the accounts of magnitude and time of lunar eclipses are accurate and reliable. Based on a discussion of 68 lunar eclipses that occurred after midnight, it is suggested that the records of these phenomena in Chinese literature used dawn as the beginning of each day. Also probed is whether the penumbral lunar eclipses were visible, and whether there are any observational records of penumbral eclipses in ancient China.
