The I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium ("The Stanback") is an embodiment of South Carolina State University's commitment to community service, enhancing the appreciation of both the Arts and Sciences in a single facility. As the only facility of its kind on the campus of a Historically Black College and University, the Museum's programs include aesthetic appreciation, historical and didactic information, and scientific and technological presentations that encourage the development of critical thinking and creative skills for its student and adult constituencies.
The Planetarium at the Stanback is a multi-faceted facility that provides a unique learning opportunity for students, faculty and staff at South Carolina State University, K-12 students in the surrounding community, and members of the community at large. With the ability to accommodate up to 82 visitors, the planetarium is a wonderful educational resource. It features a Minolta IIB Planetarium Star Projector that projects 4000 stars onto the 40-foot domed ceiling and can simulate the evening sky for any time, date, and place. The planetarium is slated to be completely upgraded with plans to feature computer automation and full-dome video capabilities.
Support for this work was provided by the NSF PAARE program to South Carolina State University under award AST-0750814.
