The basic concepts of the hybrid simulation are discussed. The fundamental equations describe a magnetized plasma in which the ions are treated kinetically and the electrons as massless, charge-neutralizing fluid. The characteristic spatial and temporal scales are those associated with the ion motion. Two specific applications of this algorithm to the study of particle acceleration by collisionless shocks are also discussed. We show the results of recent numerical simulations indicating the efficient acceleration of thermal protons incident on both parallel and perpendicular shocks.
