The Hyades group and the determination of its approximate distance are discussed. The history of observations is traced, with an emphasis on the discovery of the Hyades' motion in the Taurus stream. The concept of moving-cluster parallax is introduced and illustrated with diagrams, and the difficulties inherent in calculating the distance to the Hyades by this method are indicated. Alternative methods, including proper-motion gradient, trigonometric parallaxes, dynamic parallax, Ca II K (3934 A) parallax, and photometric approaches are characterized, and the different distances (ranging in the distance modulus from 3.19 to 3.32 min) are compared in a table.
