Scientific paper

The developmental history of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is reviewed, and the scientific aims and general design of the platform and instrumentation are discussed. The HST has a 2.4-m primary mirror (permitting observations of objects 50 times fainter than can be observed with the largest ground-based telescopes) and is designed for Shuttle launch (now planned for late 1988) to a 500-km-altitude orbit and periodic Shuttle maintenance and stationkeeping over a 15-yr lifetime. Consideration is given to preliminary development studies by NASA in the 1970s, NASA and U.S. Congress approval in 1977-1978, the organization and activities of the Space Telescope Science Institute and the Space Telescope - European Coordinating Facility, and the launch and maintenance procedures. Drawings, diagrams, and photographs are provided.
