We have detected a galaxy that is coincident with the fading optical counterpart of GRB 971214. Spectroscopy with the Keck telescope shows the presence of a strong emission feature which we argue is Lyman alpha, redshifted by z=3.4. The inferred energetics for this GRB are an order of magnitude larger than can be accomodated by coalescing neutron star models. Before abandoning this popular model it is important to rule out other possibilities, principally that the real host is a foreground galaxy. A deep HST STIS observation is urgently needed to either confirm or deny this remaining possibility.
