The numerous dark clouds associated with the emission nebula IC 1396 were surveyed in the 6 cm H2CO absorption line. It is shown that the clouds are divided into two groups which approach each other with a typical relative velocity of 10 km s-1. Several clouds show bulk motion differences of a few km s-1 on the scale of the beamwidth (3arcmin). A scenario of the evolutionary interplay of the star and the clouds is suggested which also explains why the exciting star HD 206267 is not situated near the minimum of the radio continuum.
