The BL Lac type quasar PKS 1749+096 underwent a strong optical outburst (R 13.8) during the summer of 2007. To study the intraday and longer timescale variations, and color index changes, during this outburst we initiated a collaborative observing program to obtain B, V, R and I filtered CCD images using telescopes at Colgate University Foggy Bottom Observatory (FBO), Vassar College Observatory, Grove Creek Observatory in Australia, and Wheaton College Observatory. These data, along with earlier observations from FBO and the Univ. of Florida photographic quasar monitoring program, reveal that during the 2007 outburst this blazar reached its brightest level in three decades. Comparison of centimeter and sub-millimeter wavelength radio observations with the optical light curve indicates radio variations may be correlated with the 2007 optical outburst. We gratefully acknowledge support for student research through an REU grant to the Keck Northeast Astronomy Consortium from the National Science Foundation and from the Vassar URSI (Undergraduate Research Summer Institute) program.
