The HILAT experiment has been in progress to study small scale features in the earth's ionosphere that display plasma instabilities due to interactions with Birkeland currents. The spacecraft carries a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer with a resolution of 0.314 sec and 20 nanoteslas. Each axial sensor transmits 20 samples per second. A numerical model has been defined for the Birkeland currents and the magnitude of observed deviations. The data are being analyzed with an eye to the relationship between the small-scale Birkeland currents and ionospheric scintillations. Sample data from 100 sec of measurements of magnetic field disturbances are provided.
