The paper describes the instrumentation for a high-time-resolution photometer system. The main components described are the two-channel photometer head, a photon counting unit, a data logger (an HP 5401 B multichannel analyzer), a time base, the time and frequency standard, and the control logic and interfaces. The absolute timing of the optical pulsar NP 0532 can be carried out as a routine task with great ease of operation. A typical observing run, in bad sky conditions, on the recurrent nova T CrB with 1-sec sampling time is shown. The light curve shows the gross features of the flickering intrinsic to the target with quasi-periodic components of 3.6 and 6.7 min.
