X-ray observations of the fast-transient source 3A 1431 - 409 and optical observations of the RS CVn-like system 'V532 Cen star 1, which is proposed as a probable identification for the X-ray source, are presented. The physical parameters of the system are discussed and it is shown that, assuming the identification is correct, this is the most energetic X-ray event so far detected from an RS CVn-like system.
