ESA's Herschel Space Observatory to be launched in 2009, is the first space observatory covering the full far-infrared and submillimetre wavelength range (60-670 μm). The Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) is one of the three science instruments. It employs two Ge:Ga photoconductor arrays and two bolometer arrays to perform imaging line spectroscopy and imaging photometry in the 60-210 μm wavelength band.
The HERSCHEL ground segment (Herschel Common Science System - HCSS) is implemented using Java technology and written in a common effort by the HERSCHEL Science Center and the three instrument teams.
We give a detailed description of the PACS Photometer Pipeline and how to run it in interactive sessions. We address issues such as Instrument Mode-dependent data processing, architectural issues to make it usable in interactive environments, and descriptions of certain processing steps.
