Herschel Hifi, Data Simulator
Scientific paper
We present a data simulator for the HIFI instrument on Herschel which allows to perform simulated observations including model source spectral and spatial distributions on the sky and instrument noise and drifts. In the final implementation, the data will be processed through the standard HIFI pipeline and the observation sequence will be linked into the Herschel uplink command stream. The simulator is used to test and debug all stages of the data pipeline and the up- and downlink command syntax and data formats, and to test and optimize the observing procedures with realistic instrument and satellite performance characteristics. We show first applications of the simulator: a deep integration on a weak extragalactic line, and 30 GHz wide spectral line scan of a simulated high mass star forming core.
