We present a new profile-fit based on VPFIT to a published hydrogen Lyman alpha forest absorption spectrum of QSO 0302-003 from Keck HIRES data, kindly provided by A. Songaila and collaborators. The fit will be used to model the HeII Gunn-Peterson effect, in conjunction with new data from STIS observations scheduled for late 1997 in the far UV at low and medium resolution. Differences with the fit obtained by Songaila et al. will be discussed. Implications for the Gunn-Peterson effect will be considered, subject to the success of the scheduled STIS observations.
