A comparison is given of Harang discontinuity local time measurements at auroral ionospheric altitudes by STARE radars, and the local time of the plasmapause evening position measured at the geostationary altitude by GEOS-2, with both local times being correlated with the daily averaged magnetic index. A correlation coefficient of 0.8 is found for the two local times in a case study of 54 events covering a four month period. A comparison of the Harang discontinuity's L-shell projection into the equatorial plane and evening plasmapause boundary with other spacecraft-detected boundaries shows that while the former corresponds to the energetic electron boundary, the latter corresponds to the equatorward auroral boundary. It is also found that the direction of the magnetospheric E-field changes from dawn to dusk during quiet conditions to predawn-predusk during high magnetic activity.
