A new geopotential model, GRIM 2, was computed, using most of the optical and laser observations made on major geodetic satellites as well as all gravimetric informations now available on a 1 deg x 1 deg basis. Zonal harmonics Clo have been computed up to l=23, and tesseral harmonics up to l=m=30. The model also includes the coordinates of 38 stations. This model is much better than the previously published GRIM 1 (which was a limited satellite solution) for satellite orbit computation, geoid heights representation, and station coordinates consistency in major datums. All tests made so far have indicated that this solution is close to the recent GEM 8 model computed at the Goddard Space Flight Center: satellite orbit representation on long arcs is often better with GRIM 2, and the geoid profiles are in very good agreement with the 1975 Vincent and Marsh gravimetric geoid.
