Petrologic analysis indicates that the Grefsheim meteorite, which fell in Norway in 1976, can be classified as an L5 chondrite, with some textural features suggesting a transition to L4. A high degree of crystallinity in the matrix, and the occasional intergrowth of matrix and chondrule material support the L5 classification. The well defined orthopyroxene and glass chondrules, on the other hand, indicate a transition to the L4 category. A minor amount of clinopyroxene, the microcrystalline aggregates of plagioclase, and the homogeneity of the olivine and orthopyroxene compositions strengthen the L5 classification.
