In connection with investigations of the Venus phase for the determination of the Schroeter effect, it was found that differences between the concept of greatest elongation and geometric dichotomy are often not sufficiently taken into account. A description is, therefore, presented of the significance of the distinction between the two concepts for the study of the planets Mercury and Venus.
