The great circle reduction step of the Hipparcos data processing, is presented. The great circle reductions yield improved information on the along scan satellite attitude, and information on the geometrical transformation between the coordinates on the sky and coordinates on the primary modulating grid. In order to solve the resulting observation equations, a method based on Cholesky factorization of the large, sparse matrices and on techniques developed for geodetic applications, is used. Moreover, the reordering of the star parameters and the rank deficiencies are included.
