The Global Paleomagnetic Database is the result of an international project sponsored by Division I of IAGA and funded through contributions from nine countries. It has been developed using the ORACLE Relational Database Management System as agreed at the first Workshop on databases in paleomagnetism and rock magnetism held in Czechoslovakia in June/July 1988. All published data up to the end of 1988 are included in the database and updates will occur every four years through the IAGA Division I Working Groups in Paleomagnetism and Rock Magnetism. This document outlines the structure of the database and provides details for installing and maintaining both the ORACLE software and the Global Database on a Personal Computer under MS-DOS. Examples of querying the database using SQL (Structured Query Language), now designated the official international language for database systems, are given.
