Scientific paper

The Giotto spacecraft encountered Halley's comet on 14 March 1986, passing the nucleus at a distance of 600 km on the sunward side. Its scientific payload comprising a camera, three mass spectrometers for analysis of the neutrals, ions and dust, a photopolarimeter and various plasma experiments worked flawlessly and returned a wealth of data. Results on the nucleus, the composition of the cometary atmosphere, and the interaction of the solar wind plasma with the cometary ionosphere are described. Although damaged during the flyby, Giotto may be retargeted using an Earth swingby maneuver to encounter another comet.
