GIRL consists basically of a cryostat containing a telescope and interchangeable scientific instruments. It is to be flown repeatedly on Spacelab for the conduction of studies related to infrared astronomy, the determination of characteristics of the earth's atmosphere, and He II physics. The 300 l tank of the cryostat will be filled on the ground with superfluid helium. The scientific instruments include a camera, a photometer-polarimeter, an Ebert-Fastie spectrometer, and a Michelson interferometer. GIRL will be mounted to the Instrument Pointing System. Attention is given to the observing program, the telescope, the control and data system, and the development schedule.
