The characteristics of the Martian surface are reviewed and a scenario for the geological evolution of Mars is presented. The major stages of Martian evolution are described, including formation by accretion, meteorite bombardment, the creation of a system of radial faults, erosion, ice formation, and volcanic activity. The geological and climatological evolution of Mars and the earth are compared, focusing on the hypothesis that conditions favorable for the origin of life may have once existed on Mars.
