It is suggested that the passage of the terminator across the earth might be the mechanism for the excitation of large scale atmospheric disturbances. Due to earth rotation the terminator line, at low and mid-latitudes at heights between 120 and 140 km, moves at velocities greater than that of sound, and a supersonic stream flows above the terminator. It is shown that a periodic disturbance structure may form perpendicular to the plane of the terminator. The nature of such disturbances in the E region is considered.
