I will present the results of an investigation into the experiences of a mixture of attendees, of assorted ages, at a variety of astronomy outreach events held at the Columbia University Observatory in Manhattan. We assessed reactions at events designed for children, adults, families and `the general public' by monitoring immediate responses, conducting informal interviews and collating results from questionnaires. I will review the array of means by which learning took place at these events and I will show how we propose to incorporate what we have discovered into the planning of future events.
