A method in which the relativistic magnetohydrodynamic equations are rewritten in the language of the (2 + 2) formalism is proposed for the solution of the Einstein equations, using the concept of Maxwellian or hydromagnetic surfaces. Limitations of the (3 + 1) approach are first pointed out. The present method is shown to achieve a fundamental and self-evident meaning for all the geometrical objects playing an important role in this formalism. The approach has application to the development of full general relativistic models of AGNs and related phenomenon.
