The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), the next-generation high-energy gamma-ray mission, is scheduled for launch in 2006. The GLAST Observatory will have two scientific instruments: (1) The Large Area Telescope (LAT) is an imaging, wide field-of-view telescope sensitive to radiation over the energy range from 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. The LAT will have, depending on energy, sensitivity more than 40 times better than that of EGRET. (2) The Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) operates from 10 keV to 25 MeV. The LAT sensitivity is 4×10-9photons cm-2 s-1 (>100 MeV) for a one year all-sky survey. The combination of the LAT and the GBM instruments will provide spectral observations of gamma-ray bursts over 6 orders of magnitude in energy. The upper end of the LAT's energy range overlaps with ground-based observatories to provide an unprecedented capability to observe sites of particle acceleration in the Universe. GLAST will operate for a minimum of 5 years, with the first year devoted to an all-sky survey, followed by observations determined by peer-reviewed Guest Investigator proposals. .
