Created as part of a cooperative effort, the 'Gamma-1' telescope is designed for investigations in the new and rapidly developing field of gamma-astronomy. In terms of such characteristics as sensitivity and angular resolution, the telescope surpasses those used earlier on the SAS-2 and COS-B satellites. The telescope's sensitivity area is equal to 1400 sq cm; its angular resolution is equal to 1.2 deg at 300 MeV and less than 20 arcmin when the coded mask is moved into the field of view. The energy range of the registering gamma-ray quanta is 50-500 MeV; the energy resolution varies from 55 percent at 100 MeV to 34 percent at 550 MeV. The characteristics of the telescope were determined by Monte Carlo calculations and calibrations with accelerator beams.
