We present an analysis of the UV and optical properties of nearly 3100 z≲3 quasars matched in both the GALEX GR1 and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 (SDSS DR3). We find matches for 3105 of the 6371 SDSS DR3 quasars covered by GALEX tiles; these matches indicate a mean astrometric accuracy of ˜ 1.5 arcseconds for GALEX, and we have empirically calculated the UV photometric errors from multi-epoch GALEX observations. An analysis of the UV/optical ( ˜ 400-9000{Å} rest-frame) spectral energy distributions, constructed from independent redshift and luminosity bins, are used to examine possible correlations of the UV and optical power-law spectral indices with luminosity. The relative colors of the quasars detected by both the SDSS and GALEX show clear evidence for significant extragalactic reddening in the UV bands.
Funding for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Participating Institutions, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Japanese Monbukagakusho, the Max Planck Society, and the HEFCE. GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) is a NASA Small Explorer, launched in April 2003. We gratefully acknowledge NASA's support for construction, operation, and science analysis for the GALEX mission.
