The GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS) is large targeted survey designed to measure the HI content of 1000 massive galaxies (log M*>10) selected from the SDSS spectroscopic and GALEX imaging surveys. A principal goal of GASS is to provide an unbiased view of the processes responsible for the transition between blue, star-forming spirals and red, passively-evolving ellipticals. The combination of SDSS, GALEX and Arecibo data is producing a unique, homogeneous dataset of structural and physical parameters, star formation rates (SFRs) and gas properties of massive galaxies that will be of considerable legacy value for the astronomical community at large. In this talk we describe initial results on the HI properties of 250 galaxies, nearly a quarter of our sample, and present scaling relations between gas fraction and other physical properties including stellar mass, morphology, stellar mass surface density and star formation rate. We also highlight several unusual galaxies that may be in the process of accreting new gas or losing their remaining gas supply and discuss how data from several corollary programs (CO, ground-based long-slit spectroscopy) will be used to interpret our results.
