Scientific paper

Rocket and satellite observational data on galactic X-ray sources are reviewed. These sources are seen to exhibit time variations which may be aperiodic, periodic, or quasi-periodic on timescales ranging from msec to months. Variations on timescales from msec to minutes can be understood in terms of the orbital period of material about a black hole, or of the rotation period of an accreting neutron star. Periodic and perhaps quasi-periodic variations on timescales of hours to days reflect the orbital period of the close binary system of which the X-ray source is a member. Variations on longer timescales are not yet understood. They could involve such mechanisms as periastron passage in an eccentric, long-period binary system, hydrodynamical instabilities of accreting material, or fluctuations in a stellar wind.
