A recent measurement using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique has strengthened previous indications that certain regions of the galactic plane are emitters of very high energy γ-rays. The flux of γ-rays of energy in excess of 1000 GeV has been measured and is 3×10-7photon cm-2s-1ster-1 from parts of the Cygnus region. This flux is higher than that extrapolated from earlier measurements at an energy of 150 GeV in which the results were averaged over broader bands of longitude during shorter scans across the plane. The authors find no correlation between the very high energy γ-ray emission and the total hydrogen column density, but a possible correlation with the stellar density extends to an observed lack of emission near the galactic equator which was noted in previous VHE measurements at these longitudes.
