The results of recent estimates of the current rate of meteorite falls derived from camera network observations differ from estimates derived from the statistics of the recovery of small fragments in Roosevelt County, New Mexico, by about a factor of 3. This paper examines the causes for the difference in the two estimates. Results suggest that the seemingly insecure calibration of the decay time for small fragments in New Mexico may be the source of the discrepancy. Another problem that remains uncalibrated is the large size of a typical strewn field relative to the small search areas.
