A discussion is presented of the formation and destruction mechanisms of the molecular ion HeH(+) in astrophysical plasmas. Calculations are made of the steady state abundance of HeH(+) in planetary nebulae and in dense clouds subjected to X-ray and XUV ionization. The excitation processes are investigated, and estimates are made of the emission-line intensities at 149.13, 3.364, and 3.607 microns. Emission at 149.13 microns from H II blisters and at 3.364 microns from high density planetary nebulae may be detectable.
