Abstract

Study is made of the behavior of the moving bridge in an electromagnetic railgun accelerator where the rails are implemented as mercury-filled channels. In particular, the force acting on the bridge is investigated experimentally as a function of the current, the shape of the rails and the bridge, and the location of the feeding buses. The effect of eddy currents and pinch compression in mercury on the motion of the bridge is evaluated, and experimental results are generalized in an empirical relationship. A theoretical model using the approximation of infinitely thin wires is proposed which explains the empirical results.
