The focal reducer observing method has been designed since 1950 at the Marseilles Observatory for long slit, field spectrography and Fabry-Perot interferometry, with the main advantage to increase the final focal ratio of any telescope. The use of the new detectors, mainly CCD, was generalizing the focal reducer method on most of the large telescopes. Discussions for the very large telescopes of the future, like VLT, demonstrate new performances of the focal reducer but also some severe limitations due to the large size of these new telescopes as well as the constant improvement of the linear resolution of the next generation CCD. Anyway, some original solutions are suggested.
